Make it a Nightly Habit!

Before you turn in for the night, take a few moments to make sure that your home is secure. Make it a routine that you run through every night!

Remove valuables, keys, and garage door openers from vehicles.

Lock all your car doors.

Turn on your outside lights.

Make sure your garage door is closed.

Close and lock your house doors and windows.

Close your blinds and shades.

Activate your alarm and video camera systems.

The most reported stolen items from vehicles are key fobs, spare keys, money, wallets, firearms, laptops, tools, and the actual vehicles. Don’t let someone take what you have worked hard for. Secure your belongings!

Criminals look for easy targets by walking through neighborhoods, often in groups, checking car and house doors. When they find an open door, they’ll enter, looking for valuables and ways to take cars. They will open garage doors when they find a door opener in an unlocked car, or they’ll break a car window to get to the garage door opener if they can see it inside. Once in your house, they’ll look for the car keys or other valuables, and take them. Quite often, these criminals are armed with firearms, and they are not afraid of confrontation.

If you see something, say something. A car slowly moving through a neighborhood with no lights on… A person checking car doors… call 9-1-1. Is your neighbor’s garage door open? Let them know.
